Imagine that your dumb habits, anger management problems, inappropriate jealousy, do-it-tomorrow procrastination, paralyzing social anxiety, nasty inner critics, and total self-sabotage was really just a confused way of saying “I love you!” to yourself.
I know, it sounds corny, but it’s true!
One of my geniuses is to find cool stuff and share it with people. (I used to call this “flakiness” because I usually didn’t act on the cool stuff myself!)
Well, I’ve recently discovered a technique of personal change I’m excited to share with people. It’s called Core Transformation, and it really does get to the core of any unwanted feeling, behavior, or thought.
One client of mine said “this is the most powerful psychological stuff I’ve ever experienced.” I’ve also found it to be the most gentle.
In fact, I’ve found it so powerful that I’ve given up all the previous personal development stuff I’ve been into for the last 12 or so years to devote myself to this technique.
Core Transformation Coaching with Duff
Core Transformation sessions are 90-minute journeys into greater wholeness than you ever thought possible. Many people call their experience “spiritual,” although there are no wacky beliefs required, nor will you need to change any of your existing beliefs.
Beginning with something you want to change, we’ll explore why these parts of you got so confused, what they are actually wanting, and how they can now just have what they want–without all the struggle. Ahhh….
Examples of stuff that clears up with Core Transformation include: unwanted anger, feeling driven to perfectionism or achievement, procrastination, anxiety about money, bad habits, repetitive worrisome thoughts, inner critics and bullies, unresolved grief, and pretty much any kind of inner conflict.
Impossible to Fail
If you’re like me, you’ve tried and failed at dieting, exercise, personal productivity, meditation, yoga, staying on a budget, being nice to people, polyphasic sleep (I made it about 26 hours), marketing yourself without being cheesy, and all sorts of other personal development goals…and then felt guilty about it. This process can help.
In fact, it’s impossible to fail, because there’s no trying, pushing, or forcing in Core Transformation. That said, Core Transformation is surprisingly effective at resolving particular problems.
During our session, I’ll gently guide you in getting to know parts of yourself on progressively deeper levels. After the session, you’ll find yourself more naturally aligned and in tune. Things will start falling into place and changes will begin happening naturally, without struggle, forcing, or “pushing yourself.”
In the Battle Against the Self, No Matter Who Wins, You Lose!
Most people find Core Transformation incredibly powerful, but yet more gentle and pleasurable than they thought possible–especially if they’ve been doing the push-yourself-to-success kind of personal development that’s so popular.
Pushing yourself to achieve massive success is so 1980’s anyway. Zen is in. It’s time for an easier, simpler way, don’t you think?
If you’ve ever tried making a change in your life, you’ve probably experienced when part of you wants to go to the gym, and another part of you wants to sit on the couch and watch just one more episode of Lost (metaphorically speaking). Pushing yourself works temporarily, but increases the inner conflict–same with giving in. Only understanding what all parts are really wanting will allow you to change sustainably, without the constant inner war.
Guilt-Free, Fast Change
Unlike therapy, this process can be done mostly content free, so if you want to change something you feel ashamed about, you don’t have to tell me that you chase squirrels naked at night in order to make the changes you want. Nor do you have to cry endlessly about it, as this process does not involve endless “catharsis” as if you needed to puke up all your stuff in order to be healthy. Yuck.
Also unlike many people’s past experience of therapy, this stuff actually leads to changes, and usually quite quickly. (Although some changes take longer, and some stuff seems to pretty much stick around forever no matter what technique you use. As Buddha said, life is suffering. But Core Transformation can help you to accept what you cannot change and change the things you can in far less time than old-school-7-years-on-the-couch-free-associating-psychoanalysis.)
No Pain, No Pain
What I’ve found so remarkable is how good this process can feel. What you think is the worst, most unlovable stuff about you is experienced as a doorway to love, peace, wholeness, and other mushy stuff. All that Buddhist talk about “basic goodness” actually makes sense to me now. Those confused parts of you really do want good things for you, honest.
How Does This Work, Duff?
Glad you asked! Sessions are 90 minutes long and while they are great in-person (for those in Boulder, CO), many people find that they can more easily share about their challenges over the phone to a friendly voice across the globe.
I also do Skype video, which makes me feel a bit like a futuristic alien life coach from another planet…which is a pretty good description of how I actually feel a lot of the time.
Transformation by Donation
I’m currently offering sessions of Core Transformation on a donation basis.
Update 5/14/2009: I was doing sessions on a donation basis, but I found that everyone was either paying me my full rate or nothing at all! So I’ve decided to just have a clear-cut fee, and if for some reason you can’t pay it but would love the work, don’t let that be an obstacle. If you are in financial need, just let me know and I’d truly be happy to hear your case and decide on whether to do pro bono or sliding scale rates.
How Much is It?
I currently charge $105 for a 90 minute session of Core Transformation Coaching, or $75 for an hour. I strongly recommend the first session be 90 minutes. Subsequent sessions (if needed) can often be done in an hour once you learn the process and integrate objecting parts, due to a “streamlining” effect.
Many coaches charge a lot more, upwards of $250-$400 an hour, often with multiple month contracts. Most decent therapists here in Boulder, Colorado charge at least $150 an hour, and usually take 10-40 sessions for the results you want (no joke). My clients generally are happy with 1-5 sessions, and occasionally 10-20 for multiple problem areas. It’s totally up to you what you want. I recommend clients who get serious about this process to do it on their own, eliminating any dependence on continuing work with me.
So I suggest you hire me while I’m still cheap!
While I value keeping good coaching accessible for people of varying financial need, I also plan on raising my rates significantly for those who can afford it as my practice grows.

What a Client, Interviewee, and All-Around Smart Dude Said About My Coaching…
“Duff’s coaching has helped me double my productivity in less than a month. And during a one-hour coaching session he seems to have permanently ended my email insanity (I spend about 1/4th as much time on email as I did before). Most importantly, Duff is great at asking incisive questions that cut to the core of my issues and force me to reframe problems in a way that makes them manageable. Money spent on coaching with Duff is some of the best money I’ve spent in a long time.”

While I don’t do productivity specific coaching anymore, Core Transformation can help to clear out blocks to doing things naturally and with more ease. It can help you enjoy your work more, as well as find work that doesn’t feel like work (your Life’s Work).
Thanks for reading, and whether you decide to hire me or not, have a wonderful day!
